About Spline
Spline is a browser-based 3D design tool for building interactive 3D scenes for the web. Designers model objects, apply materials and lighting, add animations and interactions such as hover and scroll effects, and then embed or export the result to websites and apps without writing graphics code.
It fills a gap that traditional 3D software never targeted. Blender, Cinema 4D and Maya are powerful but have steep learning curves and are aimed at rendering images and video; Spline is aimed at product and web designers who want lightweight, real-time 3D that runs in a browser. Its interface borrows heavily from familiar 2D design tools, so someone comfortable in Figma can produce a convincing interactive scene quickly.
The workflow is collaborative and web-native. Multiple people can work in the same file, scenes publish to a shareable URL or embed with a snippet, and there are exports and code integrations for React, plain web pages, iOS and other targets, plus integrations with site builders such as Framer and Webflow. States, events and variables let designers build interactive behaviour, and AI features help generate objects and textures from prompts.
Typical uses are hero sections on landing pages, product showcases, interactive illustrations, onboarding moments and prototypes that need depth. It is especially popular in startup and SaaS marketing, where a subtle animated 3D element helps a homepage stand out.
The constraints are real-time performance and depth. Heavy scenes can slow page loads, particularly on mobile, so restraint matters, and Spline is not a replacement for professional 3D software when you need detailed modelling, sculpting or film-quality rendering.
Alternatives include Blender for full 3D production at no cost; Three.js and React Three Fiber for developers who want complete control in code; Vectary for browser 3D with an AR focus; and Rive or Lottie for 2D interactive animation.
Choose Spline when you want interactive 3D on the web designed visually rather than coded.
