Digital presence
About Sketch
Sketch is a design tool for creating user interfaces, icons and digital product designs. It is a native application for macOS, complemented by a web app for sharing, inspecting and collaborating, and it played a central role in the history of interface design tools.
Sketch largely defined the modern category. Before it, many interface designers worked in Photoshop, a tool built for photo editing; Sketch offered a lightweight, vector-based editor focused purely on screens, with artboards, reusable symbols, shared styles and a plugin ecosystem. Through the 2010s it became the standard tool for product designers, and many workflows and conventions later adopted by other tools, such as component libraries and design systems, matured there.
The product today includes symbols and components with overrides, shared libraries for design systems, smart layout that resizes elements automatically, prototyping with interactions and flows, and real-time collaboration in documents. The web app lets developers inspect designs and export assets, and lets stakeholders comment without owning a Mac. Being a native Mac app gives it fast performance, offline work and deep integration with macOS, which many designers prefer to browser-based tools. Sketch has also emphasised privacy and data control, with documents that can be stored locally.
The biggest factor in its market position is competition from Figma, whose browser-based, multiplayer approach and cross-platform availability won over many teams, particularly those with Windows and Linux users. Sketch's Mac-only editor limits it in mixed-platform organisations, and its plugin and community ecosystem, while long-established, is smaller than Figma's today. Pricing is a subscription per editor, with a Mac-only licence option for individuals.
Alternatives include Figma, the market leader for collaborative interface design; Penpot, an open-source, self-hostable alternative; Framer for design combined with publishing websites; Adobe XD's successors within Adobe's ecosystem; Lunacy for a free cross-platform editor; and Affinity Designer for vector illustration.
Choose Sketch when your design team works on Macs and values a fast, native, privacy-conscious tool.
