About Excalidraw

Excalidraw is an open-source virtual whiteboard for sketching diagrams with a hand-drawn look. You draw boxes, arrows, text and freehand shapes on an infinite canvas, and the deliberately rough, sketchy style makes diagrams feel like quick working drawings rather than polished artefacts. That aesthetic is more than decoration. A diagram that looks finished invites people to argue about alignment and colour; one that looks sketched invites them to argue about the idea. That is why Excalidraw became a favourite of software engineers for architecture diagrams, system design interviews, technical blog posts and explaining a concept during a call. The free web app requires no account and starts instantly. Collaboration works by sharing a link, and shared sessions are end-to-end encrypted. Drawings can be saved as files, exported to PNG or SVG with the scene embedded so they can be reopened and edited, and extended with community libraries of shapes such as cloud architecture icons. Excalidraw+ adds paid features for teams such as persistent workspaces and presentation mode. Because the editor is an open-source React component, it is embedded in many other products, and there are popular integrations for Obsidian, VS Code and documentation tools. That reach is a large part of its staying power: people meet it in tools they already use. The limits are intentional. It is not built for pixel-perfect design, large structured diagrams with automatic layout, or formal notations, and very large canvases can become unwieldy. Alternatives include tldraw, another open-source infinite canvas with a cleaner default style and a developer SDK; Whimsical and Miro for collaborative team whiteboarding with templates; diagrams.net (draw.io) for precise, formal diagrams; Mermaid for diagrams written as code; and FigJam for teams already using Figma. Choose Excalidraw when you want the fastest way to sketch and share an idea, especially a technical one. Choose a structured diagramming tool when precision matters more than speed.
