Chainlink

Chainlink is a decentralised oracle network that connects blockchains to data and systems outside them. Smart contracts cannot access external information on their own, so Chainlink provides that information - most famously asset price data - in a way designed to be tamper-resistant and reliable. The need is fundamental to decentralised finance. A lending protocol needs to know the price of collateral to decide when a loan is undercollateralised; a derivatives protocol needs market prices to settle contracts. If a single source provided that data, it would become a point of failure or manipulation. Chainlink's price feeds aggregate data from many independent node operators and data sources, and have become one of the most widely used pieces of infrastructure in DeFi, securing very large amounts of value across many blockchains. Chainlink's services have expanded beyond price feeds. Data Streams provide low-latency market data for fast-moving applications; verifiable random functions supply provably fair randomness for games and NFTs; automation services trigger smart contract functions based on conditions or schedules; and Functions let smart contracts call external APIs. The Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) enables tokens and messages to move securely between blockchains, and Chainlink has positioned itself as infrastructure for traditional financial institutions exploring tokenised assets, working with banks and financial market infrastructure providers. The network's native token, LINK, is used to pay node operators and in staking mechanisms intended to strengthen security. As with any crypto asset, its market value is volatile, and nothing here is investment advice. The trade-offs centre on trust assumptions and cost: oracle networks reduce but do not eliminate reliance on node operators, and using premium data services involves fees. Alternatives include Pyth Network, which focuses on first-party, low-latency financial data; API3 for first-party oracles operated by data providers; RedStone for modular oracle feeds; Band Protocol and UMA for other oracle designs; and LayerZero and Wormhole for cross-chain messaging. Choose Chainlink when your smart contracts need widely adopted, battle-tested external data or cross-chain connectivity.
