BigCommerce is a hosted e-commerce platform for building and running online stores. It provides storefront themes, a product catalogue, checkout, payments, shipping, taxes and marketing tools as a managed software service, aimed at growing brands and mid-sized businesses as well as large enterprises. Its positioning has long been as an open, flexible alternative to Shopify. BigCommerce does not charge its own transaction fees on top of payment processing regardless of which gateway a merchant uses, and it includes many features natively that competitors offer through apps, such as product options and variants, customer groups, faceted search and multi-currency selling. Multi-storefront capabilities let one account run several brands or regional stores, and integrations connect marketplaces, ERPs and point-of-sale systems. Pricing is tiered by plan with annual online sales thresholds, which means growing stores move up plans automatically as revenue increases, a common criticism. Its app marketplace and theme ecosystem are smaller than Shopify's, and the admin interface is considered less polished by some merchants. Alternatives include Shopify, the market leader with the largest ecosystem; WooCommerce for open-source commerce on WordPress; Adobe Commerce (Magento) for complex enterprise requirements; Salesforce Commerce Cloud for large retailers; Wix and Squarespace for small, design-led stores; and commercetools for enterprise headless commerce.
