About Appwrite
Appwrite is an open-source backend platform for building web, mobile and AI applications. It provides the backend services most apps need - authentication, databases, file storage, serverless functions, messaging and real-time updates - through a single API and SDKs, and can be self-hosted or used through Appwrite Cloud.
It is often described as an open-source alternative to Firebase. The appeal is the same: developers can build an application's front end without writing and operating a custom backend for user accounts, data and files. The difference is control. Because Appwrite is open source and runs in Docker, teams can host it on their own servers or any cloud, which matters for data ownership, compliance, cost predictability and avoiding lock-in to a single vendor.
The feature set is broad. Authentication supports email and password, magic links, phone sign-in, many OAuth providers and teams with roles. Databases offer document-style collections with permissions and queries. Storage handles file uploads with image transformations and access controls. Functions run server-side code in many languages on events or schedules. Messaging sends email, SMS and push notifications, and real-time subscriptions push changes to clients instantly. Appwrite Sites adds hosting for web front ends, positioning the platform as a full stack for deploying apps.
SDKs cover web frameworks, Flutter, Android, Apple platforms and server languages, which makes it popular with mobile and cross-platform developers. A strong community and a developer-friendly console support it.
The trade-offs are those of self-hosted backends: you are responsible for scaling, backups and upgrades unless you pay for the cloud, and some advanced database capabilities are more limited than a full relational database with SQL access.
Alternatives include Firebase, Google's mature managed backend; Supabase, an open-source backend built on Postgres; PocketBase, a lightweight single-file backend; Nhost for a Postgres and GraphQL stack; AWS Amplify for AWS-centric teams; and Convex for a reactive TypeScript backend.
Choose Appwrite when you want Firebase-style backend services with the freedom to self-host.
