Ahrefs

Ahrefs is an SEO software suite best known for its backlink data. It crawls the web at large scale to build an index of links between sites, and uses that data, alongside keyword and ranking data, to help marketers understand why pages rank and how to improve their own visibility in search. Its core tools cover the main SEO workflows. Site Explorer shows any domain's backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords and top pages, which makes competitor research straightforward. Keywords Explorer estimates search volume and ranking difficulty and suggests related queries across many countries and search engines. Site Audit crawls your own site for technical issues, Rank Tracker monitors positions over time, and Content Explorer finds popular content on any topic. Newer additions extend into AI search visibility, tracking how brands appear in AI assistants and answer engines, and into broader marketing intelligence. Ahrefs popularised the Domain Rating (DR) metric, a score from 0 to 100 representing the relative strength of a site's backlink profile. DR is widely quoted in SEO and link-building conversations, though it is Ahrefs' own estimate rather than a Google metric, and it is best used for comparison rather than as a goal in itself. Pricing is subscription-based with usage limits, and it is one of the more expensive tools in the category, which is the main objection from small businesses. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools offers free site audit and backlink data for sites you own, a useful entry point. The company is also known for its extensive free educational content on SEO. Alternatives include Semrush, its closest all-in-one competitor with stronger advertising and marketing features; Moz Pro, with its Domain Authority metric; Majestic for link-focused analysis; SE Ranking and Mangools for lower-cost suites; Screaming Frog for technical crawling; and Google Search Console, free and essential for your own site's data. Choose Ahrefs when backlink research and competitor analysis are central to your SEO work.
