Threads

Threads is a text-based social network from Meta, built by the Instagram team. Users share short posts, images and videos, reply to and repost others, and follow accounts, in a format similar to X. Threads launched in July 2023 and grew rapidly thanks to its connection to Instagram. That connection is its main advantage. People can sign up using their Instagram account, import their profile and follow the same accounts in a few taps, which gave Threads a huge initial audience and an easy way for creators and brands to bring their followers. Meta reported very fast early adoption, and Threads has continued to grow into one of the largest platforms in its category. The app has expanded steadily since launch: a web version, search, trending topics, custom feeds, topic tags to organise conversations, direct messages and communities. Its ranking algorithm surfaces posts from people you do not follow, as Instagram does, which helps discovery but means the feed is algorithmically curated rather than purely chronological, though a following feed is available. Meta has introduced advertising to monetise the platform. A notable direction is decentralisation. Meta committed to integrating Threads with the fediverse through the ActivityPub protocol, allowing users to share their posts with Mastodon and other compatible services and to follow fediverse accounts. That integration has rolled out gradually and remains partial. The trade-offs include its dependence on Meta's ecosystem and data practices, a culture shaped by Instagram and brands more than by news and real-time conversation, and a perception among some users that engagement favours lifestyle and creator content.
