About QuickBooks
QuickBooks is accounting software from Intuit, used by millions of small and mid-sized businesses to manage their books. It tracks income and expenses, sends invoices, connects to bank accounts, manages bills, runs reports and prepares financial information for taxes.
It is the default accounting system for small businesses in the United States and widely used in other countries such as Canada, the UK and Australia. A major reason is the accountant ecosystem: a large share of bookkeepers and accountants know QuickBooks well, many offer services built around it, and QuickBooks Online Accountant lets them manage many clients from one dashboard. For a small business, using the same software as its accountant reduces friction at tax time.
QuickBooks Online, the cloud version, connects to bank and credit card accounts to import and categorise transactions automatically, with rules and AI-assisted matching that reduce manual bookkeeping. Invoicing includes online payments, recurring invoices and reminders; expense tracking captures receipts by photo; and reports cover profit and loss, balance sheets, cash flow and sales tax. Add-ons extend it to payroll, time tracking, payments, inventory, project profitability and bill pay, and higher tiers support more users, classes and locations. A large app marketplace integrates with e-commerce, CRM and industry tools. Intuit has introduced AI agents that handle tasks such as bookkeeping, payments follow-up and financial insights.
QuickBooks is a subscription priced by plan, and price increases over time and paid add-ons are frequent complaints. It also has a learning curve for business owners without accounting knowledge, and the desktop versions have been de-emphasised in favour of the online product.
Alternatives include Xero, a strong cloud competitor popular in the UK, Australia and New Zealand; FreshBooks for service businesses focused on invoicing; Wave for free basic accounting; Zoho Books for value within the Zoho suite; Sage for established businesses; and NetSuite for larger companies needing ERP.
Choose QuickBooks when you want widely supported small-business accounting that your accountant probably already uses.
