About Netlify
Netlify is a cloud platform for building, deploying and hosting websites and web applications. Developers connect a Git repository, and Netlify builds the project and deploys it to a global network on every push, with preview URLs for every pull request and instant rollbacks.
Netlify helped popularise the Jamstack approach, where websites are pre-built into static files and served from a content delivery network, with dynamic functionality added through APIs and serverless functions. That architecture makes sites fast, secure and cheap to host, and Netlify's workflow made it accessible: no servers to configure, automatic HTTPS, and a deploy process that fits naturally into Git-based development.
The platform supports modern frameworks such as Next.js, Astro, Nuxt, SvelteKit, Remix and Gatsby, alongside static site generators. Serverless and edge functions run backend code without managing infrastructure, and features such as forms handling, identity, image optimisation, redirects and split testing remove the need for separate services for common tasks. Deploy previews let teams and clients review changes on a real URL before they go live, with collaboration features for comments. Integrations connect headless CMSs, databases and other services, and Netlify has introduced tools aimed at AI-built applications and agent-driven deployments.
Netlify offers a generous free tier for personal projects and paid plans for teams, with usage-based pricing for bandwidth, build minutes and functions. The trade-offs are that very large or complex applications may outgrow its model, bandwidth costs can rise with traffic, and some framework features are optimised first on competing platforms.
Alternatives include Vercel, its closest competitor and the company behind Next.js; Cloudflare Pages and Workers for edge-first hosting with a large free tier; Render and Railway for full-stack services and databases; AWS Amplify for AWS-centric teams; GitHub Pages for simple static sites; and Firebase Hosting for Google's ecosystem.
Choose Netlify when you want simple Git-based deploys, previews and hosting for modern web projects.
