What you actually get is three layers. Inline completion predicts the next edit rather than the next token, so it will often propose a multi-line change across the block you are working in. Inline edit takes a natural-language instruction against a selection and rewrites it in place. And the agent takes a task, decides which files to open, edits several of them, runs commands, and reads the errors back — which is where the product either saves you an afternoon or confidently produces something that compiles and is wrong. Codebase indexing is what makes the difference: the model is answering with your repository in context, not a generic snippet. Pricing is freemium. Hobby is free with limited agent requests. Individual plans start at $20 per month, with higher Pro+ and Ultra tiers that mainly buy larger agent limits rather than different features. Teams is $40 per user per month and adds central billing, admin controls, SSO and shared cloud agents; Enterprise is custom. The mechanic to understand before you commit a team is that agent usage is metered, so heavy agent workflows can push a Pro seat into usage-based charges. The honest limitation is trust calibration. The agent is genuinely capable on well-structured code with tests, and unreliable in large legacy codebases where the right change depends on context that is not in the repository. Review everything it writes. Compared with GitHub Copilot, Cursor is more aggressive and more agentic while Copilot is more conservative and lives inside the editor you already have. Windsurf is the closest direct competitor and makes similar trades. Claude Code and other terminal agents skip the editor entirely, which suits people who live in vim or a terminal. Zed is the choice if raw editor speed matters more than AI depth, and the free Continue and Cline extensions get you most of the way inside stock VS Code. Choose Cursor if you write code every day and want the AI to act on the whole project. Skip it if you mostly need autocomplete — Copilot is cheaper and calmer.
